Portrait of Frederick II of Prussia, half-length, turned to left; with tricorn, and sash worn over jacket bearing the insignia of the Order of the Black Eagle; in trompe l'oeil oval frame, on pedestal. Frédéric II was a successful military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe at the time.

A portrait of Frederick II King of Prussia (1712 - 1786). Bust-length, turned to the left with head almost facing front, wearing insignia of the Order of the Black Eagle. In an oval frame on a pedestal. Due to Frederick II's many military victories he became known as Frederick the Great. As well as his military prowess, Frederick II was a proponent of enlightened absolutism, modernised Prussian bureaucracy and reformed the judicial system. A great supporter of the French Enlightenment, Frederick often corresponded with its key figures, most notably Voltaire.

Landscapes by Johann Georg Wille (1715 - 1808), latterly known as Jean Georges Wille. Born near Koenigsberg in Germany and came to Paris in 1736 where began etching genre pictures and landscapes from the northern schools to complement his practice as a portrait engraver. His studio became one of the most important printmaking centres. This etching was published in 'Variétés de gravures', a series of thirty-seven plates representing various subjects, engraved by Wille from his own designs between 1738 and 1801. It appeared in the volume on a sheet with two other prints.

Young schoolgirl holding a bird, seen through trompe l'oeil niche. After Johann Eleazar Schenau (also identified as Johann Elias Zeissig, 1737-1806), painter and etcher born in Saxony who trained in Dresden, went to Paris 1756-70. He returned to Dresden as a member of the Academy, professor there in 1774. Director of the Meissen drawing school together with G B Casanova 1776, on his own from 1795. Engraved by J.G. Wille, engraver and publisher who became Schenau's patron, buying several paintings from the artist including that from which this print derives (now in the Dresden collection).

Young schoolgirl holding a bird, seen through trompe l'oeil niche. After Johann Eleazar Schenau (also identified as Johann Elias Zeissig, 1737-1806), painter and etcher born in Saxony who trained in Dresden, went to Paris 1756-70. He returned to Dresden as a member of the Academy, professor there in 1774. Director of the Meissen drawing school together with G B Casanova 1776, on his own from 1795. Engraved by J.G. Wille, engraver and publisher who became Schenau's patron, buying several paintings from the artist including that from which this print derives (now in the Dresden collection). This impression was formerly in the collection of the banker and print collector Lewis Loyd (1811-91). Between 1840 and 1870 Loyd assembled a collection of prints distinguished by their fine condition and early states.

Portrait of general and statesman Hieronymos von Erlach (1667 - 1748) standing behind a table, with the baton of his charge in his right hand and behind him, a helmet. At the outbreak of the Spanish War of Succession, Erlach joined the Austrian service and commanded as colonel in a regiment of the city of Bern. In 1721 he was appointed as head of the Schultheiss City and Republic of Bern. Inscription underneath in German with crest in the centre.
