Mezzotint, with large margins, watermarked laid paper, 345 x 235mm. 13½ x 9¼". A generally fine impression.
Portrait in oval frame of King George I (1660 - 1727); crown, orb and sceptre and other royal emblems, including coat of arms, below. The great-grandson of James I; he became King in 1714 at the death of Queen Anne under the terms of the Act of Settlement which was designed to ensure a Protestant succession. His coronation was followed by the ill-prepared 1715 Jacobite Rising in Scotland. A distinguished soldier and Elector of Hanover from 1698, George I continued to spend much of his time at Hanover after his accession to the British throne. By Christoph Weigel (1654 - 1725).

Mezzotint, very fine and rare. Plate: 250 x 345mm (9¾ x 13½").
Henri de Massue de Ruvigny (1648-1720), a French Huguenot. Despite his high standing in France (including being ambassador to England), he went into exile after the revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685, settling in England. In 1690 he joined the English army as a major-general of horse. In 1692 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the forces in Ireland, and later the same year he was created Viscount Galway and Baron Portarlington, in recognition of his services at the battle of Aughrim. He became Earl of Galway in 1697.

Half-length portrait of Austrian Imperial Field Marshal, Johann Carl Thüngen (1648-1709). He wears a cravat, armour, sash and his right eye is covered. He is within an oval frame with a crest surrounded by swords, guns, cannons and balls.
