Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was an explorer and writer. He travelled extensively within Asia and Africa, exploring the languages and cultures. He had a brief stint as a captain in the army of the East India Company, serving in India and the Crimean War. He then went on to join the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa. In 1861 he entered the diplomatic service and served as British Consul in Fernando Po, Damascus and, Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood in 1886.
