Hugh Boyd (1746-1794) was educated at Trinity College Dublin and went on to become editor for the political paper, the Freeholder in Dublin, before moving to London where he joing the club attended by Johnson, Goldsmith and Burke. He accompanied Lord Macartney to India as his secretary and was captured and imprisoned by the French. He became Master-Attendant in Madras where he edited the Madras Courier and other Anglo-Indian journals. His miscellaneous works were published between 1798 and 1800, and there were many who believed him,(rather than Sir Philip Francis), to be the author of the 'Junius Letters', which had appeared in the Public Advertiser, London, from 1769 to 1772, attacking George III and his ministers.

Lieutenant General Sir Robert Boyd (c.1710-1794), army officer during the Seven Years' War, including the Siege of Minorca of 1756. He served as governor of Gibraltar three times (1776-7, 1790 and 1790-4) and was buried there.

Richard Colley, Marquess Wellesley (1760 - 1842), was the Duke of Wellington's eldest brother. He was Governor-general of Bengal (1797 - 1805), and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1821-28 and 1833-34. His executors transferred to the BM his official papers (now in the British Library). Engraved by Caroline Watson (1760 - 1814).

Lady Elizabeth Foster (1757-1824), novelist and friend of Georgina Cavendish who lived with her and the Duke of Devonshire in a ménage à trois for 25 years, becoming duchess when Georgina died in 1806. Downman executed a series of portraits of women who had acted in the Richmond House Theatre, the 3rd Duke of Richmond's private theatre in Richmond House, Whitehall. Regarded as one of the grandest houses of the period, it burned down in 1791, after which the Duke concentrated on his country estate, Goodwood. First published by M. Lawson in 1788.

Portrait engraved by Caroline Watson (1760/1-1814), printmaker specializing in the stipple technique, and daughter of the Irish mezzotinter James Watson. Watson was made engraver to the queen in 1785, and was also patronized by the Bute family. While she did not exhibit in public exhibitions, Watson was one of few women who maintained an independent printmaking practice, signing her name rather than working unacknowledged, and seemingly operating a successful business judging from her wealth at the time of her death.

Colonel Robert Lilburne (1613-65), a signatory to the death warrant of King Charles I in 1649 and forty-seventh of the fifty nine Commissioners. After the restoration he was found guilty of high treason: his sentence of being hung, drawn and quartered was commuted to life in prison. His younger brother was John Lilburne, the well known Leveller. According to Alexander this print was published to meet the demand from extra-illustrators, particularly those who wanted to enlarge Clarendon's 'History of the Great Rebellion'. Alexander 89.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) was an English aristocrat and writer. She is remembered for her letters from Turkey, as wife to the ambassador, which have been described by Billie Melman as 'the very first example of a secular work by a woman about the Muslim Orient'. Portrait after a miniature; three-quarters length standing with her right arm resting on a tree branch, her cheek against her hand, her left hand at her side, wearing a simple gown with her hair dressed half up; in an oval; number 1 of a set.
