Engraved armorial bookplate for The United Service Institution (now The Royal United Services Institute), sheet 145 x 115mm. 5¾ x 4½". Trimmed within plate.
Roundel vignette of a (war) widow and children at the tomb of a serviceman, surrounded by military flags; also cannons and other weaponry; surmounted by the hull of a warship and a crown, with an anchor protruding below. A banner is inscribed with the Latin motto 'Non Nobis Solum' ("Not for ourselves alone"). The United Service Institution, founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington, was and remains concerned with national and international defence and security.
