Profile portrait by Jean-Baptiste Vérité, Jean-Sylvain Bailly (1736 - 1793), French astronomer and politician, one of the leaders of the early part of the French Revolution. He served as the mayor of Paris from 1789 to 1791 and was ultimately guillotined during the Reign of Terror. He is oted for his computation of an orbit for Halley's Comet in 1759 In oval, lettered to plaque below.
