A portrait of John Travers Cornwell more popularly known as 'Jutland Jack' or 'Boy Cornwell' who is one of the most famous recipients of the Victoria Cross. From an Archive on Frank Salisbury. Awarded Britain's highest order for military bravery at the age of 16, Cornwell became the youngest sailor ever to be decorated with the award and in doing so became a celebrated heroic figure. Cornwell was left manning the gun on HMS Chester during the Battle of Jutland in 1916 after all his companions were killed, Cornwell, though mortally wounded remained in position awaiting orders until the end of the battle. Painted by Frank O. Salisbury (1874-1962) in 1916, this painting brought Salisbury to Royal attention and he went on to paint 25 members of the House of Windsor as well as Churchill, Woodrow Wilson and other important figures of the time.
