A pair of portraits of Holy Roman Emperor Matthias (1557-1619) and his wife Anna of Tyrol (1585-1618). Matthias was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1612 after the death of his brother Rudolf II, having forced Rudolf to cede most of his lands during the previous ten years. Anna was the first Empress since the 15th century to be jointly crowned with her husband. The portraits are engraved by Aegidius Sadeler (1570-1629) a Flemish engraver active in the court of HRE Rudolf II and his successors engraving portraits of courtiers.

Germany, from a set of four allegories on European countries after Hans von Aachen. The series was dedicated to Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius. This plate is shows a young woman as Ceres and young man as Bacchus, and is an allegory on craft and war. The composition includes: tools and weaponry; a copper-plate and two burin needles, and printing press; a small violin (rebec) and a flute with a flute-case at centre; armoury, a gun, a cannon and a clock in lower right corner. In the background an army marches on the right, while peasants drink at a village tavern on the left.

Otto Heinrich, Count of Schwarzenberg (1535-90), Councillor to the Emperors Maximilian II and Rudolf II, and to William V of Bavaria, wearing a ruff and a leopard fur-lined coat, seated at a table with papers, a compass, a skull and a clock. The skull and dedication suggests this was engraved after Schwarzenberg's death in 1590, when Sadeler was court engraver in Munich. A head-and-shoulders oil portrait with the same features is attributed to Hans von Aachen (1552-1615).

A summer landscape with a shepherd and a boy shearing lambs and a woman and three children eating in the foreground, harvest scene in the middle ground with farmers cutting wheat on the left, while others load a bull-driven cart with sheaves in the centre, and three farmers threshing the cereals next to a barn at right. A village and hills are visible in the background. This is one of ‘Four Seasons’, a series of four allegorical plates showing the seasons after Bassano, engraved by Jan Sadeler c.1580.

Anthony Shirley (1565-1635) was an English traveller, whose imprisonment in 1603 by King James I was an important event because it caused the British House of Commons to assert one of its privileges, freedom of its members from arrest, in a document known as 'The Form of Apology and Satisfaction'. Published in 1613 Travels in Persia.

The three Marys (the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and Mary of Clopas, according to John) return from Jesus's cave, having found it empty. All carry jars of myrrh, with which they were planning to annoint the body of Christ. In the background are the three empty crosses. Engraved by Aegidius Sadeler II (c.1570-1629) after Bartholomeus Spranger (1546-1611). In 1570 Spranger was painter in the service of Pius V; in 1575 in Vienna at the court of Maximilian II; and in 1581 painter at the court of Rudolph II in Prague.

In the background riders are chasing deer and boars, crossbowmen are shooting birds and fishermen are using nets and line. Tennis racket on ground. Very early real tennis image. From the series 'Schema, Seu Speculum Principum'.
