A profile to left bust of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) the German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, theoretical physicist and polymath. He is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature. After David Charles Read (1790-1851), an admirer of Rembrandt's etching who began producing his own from 1827.

Thirteen etchings as called for, glued to backing sheets, original presentation in 4to folder (340 x 265mm, 13½ x 10½), green morocco with gilt border and inscription 'Read's Etchings'. Printed dedication to Mrs. James Hussey signed by Read and dated 'The Close, Salisbury, July 20 1840'.
Set of landscape etchings by David Charles Read (1790-1851), etcher and painter. He etched 237 plates between 1826 and 1844, including six sets (including this one). He etched many views around Salisbury and attracted the attention of Goethe (whose portrait he etched) and Mendelssohn, amongst others.
