Trimmed 2cm into image at sides and top, affecting artis & engraver's inscriptions, and 3cm at bottom, losing verse and publication line. A half-length portrait of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wearing fur hat and fur-lined coat, the Armenian costume he wore when he fled his native Switzerland to settle in Paris. This portrait was painted during his stay in England (January 1766 to May 1767). Engraved by Jean Edmé Nocher (b. 1736) after Allan Ramsay (1713-84), published by Nicolas-Augustin Delalain (c.1735-1806).
