Geoffrey Chaucer, bearded and wearing a hood, with a pen case hanging from a ribbon around his neck. Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400), known as the Father of English literature, was an author, philosopher, alchemist and astronomer and maintained an active career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. He was a crucial figure in developing the legitamacy of vernacular Middle English at a time when French and Latin dominanted England. He is remembered for his unfinished frame narrative 'The Canterbury Tales'. For a similar mezzotint of Chaucer but facing in the other direction see ref. 24004.

Geoffrey Chaucer (1343-1400) was an English author, poet, philosopher, bureaucrat, courtier and diplomate. He wrote many works throughout his lifetime, although he is remembered best for his unfinished narrative The Canterbury Tales. O'D undescribed; CS: undescribed.
