Lithograph. Printed area 295 x 250mm, 11½ x 9¾". Publisher's blind stamp under title. Cut.
Head and shoulders portrait of Ali Pasha (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler, surnamed Aslan, 'the Lion', or the 'Lion of Yannina', who fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire. His cruelty has become legendary. Byron visited Ali's court in Ioánnina in 1809 and wrote to his mother: 'His Highness is a remorseless tyrant, guilty of the most horrible cruelties, very brave, so good a general that they call him the Mahometan Buonaparte ... but as barbarous as he is successful, roasting rebels, etc, etc.'. Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784-1844) appears to have painted this portrait after Ali's death.

Four prospects of Annonay in the Rhône-Alpes region of southern France. Annonay is built on the hill overlooking the meeting of the deep gorges of the Deûme and the Cance, the waters of which supply the town. On June 4, 1783, the town was the location of the Montgolfier brothers first public unmanned hot air balloon flight. The event is celebrated annually each June, on the site of the flight in the place des Cordeliers. The Montgolfier brothers were natives of Annonay, and there is an obelisk in honour of them. Possibly from the larger series of views 'Elémens de paysage' after Etienne François Imbart (b.1785) draughtsman, lithographer and architect active in Paris 1819-1827.

Sir William Herschel (1738 - 1822), astronomer. In 1781 the amateur astronomer Herschel identified Uranus, the first planet to be discovered since Antiquity. He was appointed court astronomer to George III the following year, 1782. Working with his sister Caroline, whom he had trained, he made four complete surveys of the night sky and was the first person correctly to describe the Milky Way. Using his great forty-foot telescope constructed over four years, he found two new satellites of Saturn in 1789. Herschel's discoveries astonished the public and inspired Romantic writers like Blake, Byron and Keats. He discovered more than two thousand nebulae and over eight hundred double stars. By Pierre Louis ('Henri') Grevedon (1776 - 1860), published by Charles Etienne Pierre Motte. Blindstamp below title.

Napoleon and Josephine visiting the studio of David. There was great fanfare when David announced the completion of his picture. The royal couple, accompanied by a large entourage from the court, made a special visit to the artist's studio to see the work on 4 January 1808. It was an official display of royal patronage with music and a cavalry escort for the parade of carriages. Pleased with David's work and overwhelmed by the realism of the enormous canvas, Napoleon exclaimed, "What truth! This is not a painting, I can walk in it!" Surrounded by his court and all those assembled, the emperor continued: "Well done, David, very well done! You have correctly guessed my own intention in representing me as a French knight [chevalier français]. I am grateful to you for having given future generations proof of my affection for the woman with whom I share the burdens of government." Published in A.V. Arnault's 'Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon', Paris, 1822-1826.
