The Rt. Honble. Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby
The Rt. Honble. Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby "The Ladies of Llangollen". [Facsimile signatures below.]
Drawn on Stone by J.H. Lynch. Day & Haghe Lithrs. to the Queen.
Entd. at Stationer's Hall. [n.d., c.1835.]
Tinted lithograph. Sheet: 375 x 275mm (15 x 11"). Laid on album sheet with decorative border.
Touching portraits of Sarah Ponsonby (1755? - 1831), daughter of Chambre Brabazon Ponsonby, cousin of the Earl of Bessborough, and Lady Eleanor Charlotte Butler (1745? - 1829). They resolved to live together in complete isolation from society in a cottage at Plasnewydd in the vale of Llangollen, Denbighshire, north Wales. Their names were not known in the neighbourhood, and they were called 'the ladies of the vale.' They lived in complete seclusion for some fifty years, and neither left the cottage for a single night until their deaths. Their devotion to each other and their eccentric manners gave them wide notoriety. All tourists in Wales sought introduction to them, and many made the journey to Llangollen for the special purpose of visiting them. With their servant, Mary Caryll, who died before either of them, they lie buried in Plasnewydd churchyard under a triangular pyramid inscribed with their names. An Italian greyhound runs on the path in front of the two ladies; it has been noted that a succession of their pet dogs were named 'Sappho'.

He helped to open the ‘missionary road’ from the Cape north-eastward, which was important in southern African imperial politics. He also helped to shape British conceptions of southern Africa before the South African War, extolling British imperial rule, criticizing Afrikaners (Boers), and portraying Africans as in need of Christianity and civilization. Portrait commemorating Moffat's departure for South Africa (after nearly four years in Britain) in 1843.

London Pub.d May 18 1842 by Mess.rs Colnaghi & Puckle, Printsellers to Her Majesty, to the Queen Dowager, to H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent, &c, 23, Cockspur S.t.
Scarce tinted lithograph. Sheet 355 x 430mm (14 x 17"), large margins on three sides. Bit dusty
The interior of a Chinese opium den. Sir Harry Darell (1814-53), Baronet of Richmond Hill, entered the army as an ensign in the 18th Foot in 1832, becoming lieutenant in 1835. During the First Opium War he was aide-de-camp of Brigadier-General Burrell of the 18th Irish Regiment: he was present at a conference between J.J.Gordon Bremer and Admiral Chang on board HMS Wellesley (4th July 1840, subject of a lithograph by Darell also published 1842, which includes a self-portrait), just prior to the Taking of Chusan, at which he fought. He was promoted to Captain in 1841. He then served in South Africa with the 7th Dragoon Guards, being promoted to Major in 1847, then Lieut-Colonel by brevet the following year. He died in Sardinia. Although he published 'China, India, Cape of Good Hope and Vicinity. A Series of Thirteen Treble-Tinted Views from Sketches by Lieut.-Col. Sir Harry Darell, Bar.t', this plate predates the book by a decade. This plate seems to be a pair to his view of the Chusan Conference.
