Portrait of Jean Baptiste Colbert (1619-83), finance minister to Louis XIV from 1665. Colbert instigated significant ecnonomic reforms and encouraged French manufacture. Possibly derived from Robert Nanteuil's portrait of Colbert 'from the life' of 1670. Originally issued in Perrault's 'Les Hommes illustres', a series of biographies written by Perrault with portraits engraved by Edelinck, Jacques Lubin, Louis Simonneau and Van Schuppen. Collector's Mark: Lugt 2900 F. Baumgartner.
