The Reverend Joseph Hallett Batten (died October 11, 1837) was principal of the East India Company College. John Linnel was an English painter who made a good living as a fashionable portraitist, but preferred to paint landscapes. He gave up portraiture in the 1840’s and moved to Redhill to devote his career to his landscapes. These paintings were highly desired and caused Linnel to amass a great deal of wealth. However, he was not favored among his colleagues and was denied membership to the Royal Academy.

He gave up portraiture in the 1840’s and moved to Redhill to devote his career to his landscapes. These paintings were highly desired and caused Linnel to amass a great deal of wealth. Norwegian landscape after Edward Price, published as an illustration to Price's 'Norway, Views of Wild Scenery' (1839). Etching by John Linnell (1792 - 1882), painter and printmaker who was William Blake’s last patron and a good friend of Samuel Palmer (who married Linnell's daughter Hannah). After specializing in portraiture during his early career, Linnell turned towards rural landscapes in later years, which sold for high prices. Linnell's reputation deteriorated after his death but his early, visionary landscapes have recently been the subject of renewed interest.

A funeral procession, with a shrouded body being carried into a walled city, with Saul's crown preceding him. This very rare mezzotint was engraved by John Linnell after John Varley's oil of twelve years earlier, on which Linnell painting the figures. Linnell, a close friend of William Blake (as was Varley), started etching in 1813, but turned to mezzotint, with this plate being one of his first in that medium and one of the rarest.
