Large and uncommon portrait of the young Byron at sea. George Gordon Byron (1788 - 1824), commonly known simply as Lord Byron, was an Anglo-Scottish poet and a leading figure in the Romantic movement.

A view of Callendar House in Falkirk, with an artist's impression of how the Union Canal was going to affect the aesthetics of the estate. The Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal was a contour canal (running at the same level, with viaducts to cross valleys, so avoiding the use of locks), and the original plan had it running around a hill overlooking the house. The owner, William Forbes, a merchant who specialised in Royal Navy contracts, made an objection, forcing the company to built a 696-yard tunnel through Prospect Hill to the west.

The interior of Westminster Abbey during the coronation of George IV, with the crown about to be placed on his head. From Sir G. Nayler's "The Coronation of His Most Sacred Majesty King George the Fourth, solemnized in the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter Westminster upon the Nineteenth Day of July MDCCCXXI'. Nayler only published two of the five proposed parts (1823 & 1827); it was completed by George Henry Bohn and issued in 1837.

Charles Grant, Baron Glenelg (1778-1886), politician. Glenelg was secretary of state for the colonies, 1835-9, eventually resigning. Glenelg's spell in this office included two colonial crises: the outbreak of rebellion in Canada (1838), which saw the leaders of the failed uprising exiled to Bermuda; and a confrontation with Jamaican planters over the last stages of the emancipation of the slaves (1839). Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828), botanist. Smith bought Linnaeus' collection after Joseph Banks declined, and founded the Linnean society in 1788. Smith published many botanical works, including 'The English Flora' (1824-8) and did much to popularise the subject through his lectures and writings.
