John Charles Beckwith (1789-1862) was a British army officer and missionary. He entered the British army in 1803, and in 1815 he served with Sir Thomas Picton's divsion at the battles of Quatre-Bras and Waterloo, where he lost his leg after it was shattered by a cannonball. He was awarded the Waterloo Medal and promoted to lieutenant-colonel. In 1837 he was raised to colonel and in 1846 to major-general. After his injury he returned home to Halifax, where he became a founder and patron of the town's first Sunday school, and in 1826 he was invited to visit the Duke of Wellington at Apsley House in London where he read Dr William Stephen Gilly's "Narrative of an Excursion to the Mountains of Piemont" (London, 1824). This inspired Beckwith to take an interest in the plight of a small group of Protestants known as Waldensians or Vaudois who lived in the Piedmont valleys near Pinerolo. He visited the Waldensians for several years until he decided to move to Turin and devote the rest of his life to assisting them. He worked to improve Waldensian schools, and therefore collected money from friends in England, visited the schools, urged building of new schools by the community, sent teachers to Lausanne and Florence for training, and encouraged the education of women. In all he opened or restored 120 district schools. In 1848, in recognition of his labours with the Waldensians, Beckwith received the cross of St Maurice and St Lazarius from the king.

The Infante Carlos of Spain (1788-1855), son of Charles IV of Spain and first of the Carlist claimants to the Spanish throne. Shortly before his death, Carlos' brother king Ferdinand VII had changed the law (the 'Pragmatic Sanction') to permit his daughter Isabella to succeed to the throne. Carlos' claim to the throne was founded upon the illegality of the Pragmatic Sanction. From this dispute the First Carlist War took place in the 1830s, only definitively concluding in 1840, by which time Carlos had left Spain for France. A rare foreign image of the game of cricket showing a batsman about to be hit by a cricket ball, by "Draner" Jules Renard (1833-1926). When Renard-Draner was settling in Paris in the mid-19th century, the armies and navies of the world, besides engaging in occasional short wars, were engaging themselves - and most vaingloriously and conspicuously indeed - in the art of display: reviews, parades, the exchange of visits by various branches and units, a mounting elaboration and variety in the design of uniforms and the social standing and activities of those of officer rank. All of these things caught and amused the eye and mind of Draner, and this was what he most happily and most successfully set out to caricature for the diversion and pleasure of all. The chief result of his observation and his artistry was the series of 136 full-colour lithographic plates of high quality published by the firm of Daziaro in Paris and handsomely printed by the renowned establishment of Lemercier. The series was entitled "Types Militaires: Galerie militaire de toutes les nations" Soldiers and sailors of all countries and all ranks are shown with strong humorous emphasis on ludicrous situations and national characteristics, but, it must be emphasised, always with the strictest accuracy in the depiction of uniforms and accoutrements down to the most minor details of button, braid, fringe or feather. Ogliby: 268: 100.15.

Espoz y Mina first established himself running a guerilla group after Napoleon actions in Spain in 1810, and soon after the national government made him a commander-in-chief. Later in the Peninsular Wars he served under the Duke of Wellington. The restoration of Ferdinand VII saw him fall from favour, and he tried to organise two uprisings against the king. Having escaped to England, he returned to Spain following Ferdinand's death, although the government continued to fear his radicalism. Dona Maria II (1819-53), queen regent of Portugal and the Algarves from 1826-28, and from 1834-53, here portrayed at the age of around thirteen. Maria had been nominated by the elderly King Joao VI to serve as regent (as his favoured son Pedro was emperor of Brazil), but in 1828 the Joao's exiled son Miguel deposed Maria, proclaiming himself king. Thereafter Maria travelled to various European courts in search of support. Pedro later joined forces with Maria, warring with Miguel and forcing him to abdicate, restoring Maria to the throne. From a series of portraits by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860). For satirical representations of Maria visiting the British court, see refs. 30507, 30545 and 30249.

Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies (1806-78), Queen consort of Spain (1829-33) and Regent of Spain (1833-40). Maria Christina married the Spanish king Ferdinand VII in 1829, becoming regent for her daughter Isabella (the future Queen Isabella II of Spain). During the Carlist Wars (which ensued when Isabella's uncle Infante Carlos, Count of Molina tried to seize power), Maria Christina retained the throne for her daughter. Soon after the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833, Maria Christina secretly married a royal guard, Agustín Fernando Muñoz (1808-73), as to remarry publicly would have forfeited her regency. Eventually, the marriage became public and, as her position became increasingly intolerable, Maria Christina renounced the regency and left Spain with Muñoz, spending the remainder of her life in France. From a series of portraits by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860). For Isabella II as a child, see ref. 19410.
