A plate from 'Chertsey Abbey: an existence of the past', written by Lucy Wheeler, published in 1905. In the mid-19th century the site of the abbey was excavated under the supervision of the architect and archaeologist Samuel Angell, who published an account of the investigations, accompanied by a ground plan of the abbey church, in 1862.

Batty (1789-1848) was wounded when serving with the 1st Foot Guards (now the Grenadier Guards) at Waterloo, but was still serving when this book was published.
