Etching, illustration to a book, sheet/etched frame 100 x 245mm, 4 x 9¾". A fragment, with French letterpress to verso, rare. No margin outside border; staining upper right.
A wolf or fox's(?) internal organs are examined around a table by scientists; some consult charts and open books. Other learned figures conversing in groups behind, human and animal skeletons and skulls against the far wall. Possibly for Claude Perrault's 'Me´moires pour servir a l'histoire naturelle des animaux', the first important work on comparative anatomy. The frontispiece represents a meeting of the Acade´mie des sciences. The head and tail-pieces, plates and decorations were engraved by Sébastien Le Clerc (1637-1714). Le Clerc was a printmaker, draughtsman and military engineer who entered the Académie in 1672 and was later appointed professor of geometry and perspective.

Philibert de l'Orme (c.1514-1570) was a French architect, one of the great masters of the French Renaissance, holding plan & dividers. His major work was the Chateau de St Maur-des-Fosses, and in 1545 he was made architect to Francis I of France and give the charge of works in Brittany. In 1548 Henry II gave him the supervision of Fontainebleau, where he built the Chateau Neuf, and other royal buildings. Under Charles IX, he was employed to construct the Tuileries, in collaboration with Jean Bullant. His tomb of Francis I at Saint Denis Basilica remains a perfect specimen of his art. He wrote two books on architecture: Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir et à petits frais (1561) and Le premier tome de l'Architecture (1567).

Louis XIV standing in front of a wounded soldier, soldiers collecting firewood on right, and view of Douai in distance. Representation of the siege of Douai in 1667 during the War of Devolution (1667-8) in which Louis XIV's armies gained land in the Spanish Netherlands and the Franche-Comté but were forced to give most of it back to a Triple Alliance of England, Sweden and the Dutch Republic. From a series of five plates reproducing the compositions invented by Charles Lebrun for a set of tapestries celebrating the victories of Louis XIV.

Selim II (1524-1574), son of Suleiman the Magnificent known as 'Selim the Drunkard'. Among his few successess was the capture of Cyprus in 1571, but the destruction of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto the same year has been pinpointed as the beginning of the slow deline of the Empire. Engraved by Nicolaes de Clerck for a Dutch edition of Pierre Davity's 'Les estats, empires et principautez de monde'.

An oval portrait of Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632), King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, wearing a ruff and Order of the Golden Fleece. Besides being monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1587-1632, he was King of Sweden (where he is known simply as Sigismund) from 1592 until he was deposed in 1599. He was the son of King John III of Sweden and his first wife, Catherine Jagellonica of Poland.
