On verso in ink: "On this Artist's Proof Etching it will be noticed that there are very unusually, two signatures of Etchers in addition to the signature of the painter of the original picture - John Clayton Adams. The reason of this is that David Law was taken seriously ill whilst at work on the etching, and was unable to finish it. The work was then completed for him by Charles O. Cummings." The 1899 painting by John Clayton Adams is in the collection of Brighton & Hove museums.
