A portrait of Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford (1776 - 1849). Acheson was a British politician who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada and Governor General of British North America in the 19th century. In 1835, he became Governor General of British North America and instructed to appease the reformists, led by Louis-Joseph Papineau, without giving them any real power. The following year Lord Gosford learned of the planned Lower Canada Rebellion and had many of Papineau's followers arrested, although Papineau himself escaped to the United States. The next month, he issued a reward for the capture of Papineau, and declared martial law in Lower Canada. Ex Collection: The Honourable Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Caterina Rosalbina Maria de Munck [Maria Caradori-Allan] 1800-1865. A distinguished Italian soprano. Her chief attributes seem to have been clearness, beauty, polish, invention, and taste. She sang with sweetness, delicacy, and variety, and was one of the best singers in the 1840s.

Half portrait of Scottish writer and journalist Alexander Chalmers (1759-1934). Chalmers originally trained as a doctor but gave up medicine to pursue writing. As well as publishing various editions of works by writers such as Pope, Shakespeare and Johnson, Chalmers published a 'General Biographical Dictionary' (1812-17) and a 'Glossary to Shakespeare' (1807).

Full length portraits of Italian singers Guilia Grisi (1811-1869) and Luigi Lablache (1797-1858) in the roles of Elvira and Sir Georgio in Vincenz Bellini's opera I Puritani. Grisi and Lablache were two of the four international singers who, along with Antonio Tamburini and Giovanni Rubini, were known as one of the "Puritani Quartet". The group acquired the name on account of the large quantity of performances the quartet performed together including a private performance for Crown Princess Victoria on her 15th birthday. George Jones (1810-1897), "Count Johannes", was born in England and moved to the United States in 1817. He was a noted Shakespearean actor who made his theatrical debut at the Federal Street Theater in 1828. He is best remembered for a performance of Richard III. He was installed as Knight of the Golden Spur and Count Palatine in March 1847 in Europe.

María Felicia García Sitches (Malibran) (1808-1836), seen holding opera glass, she was one of the most famous singers of the 19th century. She was born in Paris, into a famous Spanish musical family. Malibran sung first in Italy, then in New York (where her father introduced Italian opera to the New World) before returning to France in 1827. The most charismatic singer of her epoch, Malibran sung frequently in England, and it was in Manchester that she died aged 28 (the cause of death was unclear). Harvard: Pg 144-2

A double portrait of Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran (1806-1836): on the left she is shown as a spectator at the opera; on the right she is shown in her dramatic costume as the old figure of Fidelma. Chalon writes 'After playing Fidelma in Cimarosa's opera Il Matrimonio Segreto Malibran went into a Pit Box to see the Ballet, or rather to afford the Public a better opportunity of appreciating her powers of transformation'. Lord Alexander George Russell (1821-1907), army general. The son of John Russell, sixth earl of Bedford, it has also been claimed that Lord Alexander was the son of Edwin Landseer, from whose painting this lithograph derives, since Landseer had an affair with his mother. Landseer's original painting 'The First Leap: Lord Alexander Russell on his Pony "Emerald"' (1829) is in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London.

A rare set of six proof lithographs of renowned ballet dancer Marie Taglioni (1804-1884) depicted in some of the roles that have established her as a central figure in the history of European dance. After A.E.Chalon, by R.J. Lane. Taglioni was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the romantic ballet, and cultivated her skill primarily at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, and at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique of the Paris Opera Ballet. She later took a three-year contract in Saint Petersburg with the Imperial Ballet.
