Social satire: a huntsman with a red coat, possibly a novice from the city, is sent flying head-first over a gate by his grey horse's sudden halt. I.(or J.)B. Brookes (1830 - 1837; fl.) published his own lithographic satires. His monogram appears similar to ‘HB' (John Doyle), perhaps deliberately.

Immortalised in a 32-line ballad which continues 'And who dare inhale her mouth's spicy gale, / Must die by the breath of Kate Kearney'.

It was in 1790 that Robert Burns (1759-1796) wrote his poem "Tam o' Shanter", which tells the story of a man who stayed too long at a public house and witnessed a disturbing vision on his way home. This song suggests happiness, a future of marriage and love; it appeared a year later in 1791.

A panicking Prince Albert has fallen through the ice on the pond in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Queen Victoria is attempting to pull him out, aided by a laughing lady-in-waiting ('Lady M_'), who says 'who would have thought His Royal Highness such a coward?'. In 1842 the Royal Humane Society presented Albert with a 'Life-Ladder', a ladder with wheels on one end, to be used in the event of accident at the royal skating parties on Virginia Water.

A scene in the interior of Westminster Hall, with firemen working pumps in a successful effort to save the building from the fire that destroyed the two Houses of Parliament. The flames can be seen through the window and door. To the right is scaffolding, which had already been erected for repairs. This print was published just two weeks after the fire.
