Edmund Burke (1729-1797); Frontispiece to "Memoirs of Edmund Burke" 1798; Politician (in parliament from 1766) and writer, best remembered for "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful" (1757) and "Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790), a founding text for modern political conservatism; its reference to "the swinish multitude" was frequently quoted in radical contexts.

Portrait of Peter Labilliere (died 1800), seated looking towards the viewer wearing a plain suit with short hair to the ears and a short fringe, pointing to a copy of the 'American Petition Present by Penn' which he holds in right hand in his lap. Also copies of 'Bp. of St Asaph's Sermon', 'Magna Charta', and 'Londn. Eveng. Jany 1st. 1780 Lettr. to the King', with a bookshelf to right behind his chair with volumes labelled 'Blair', 'Holy Bible', 'Masn. on Self Knowlge.', 'Sidney', 'Locke' and 'Cartright'. Labilliere was an eccentric army officer, named in John Wilkes’s hoax, the ‘Sayre plot’, but never arrested. He is buried on Box Hill near Dorking, head down. After a portrait by Joseph Wright (1734 - 1797), American-born pupil of Benjamin West.

Prince Lee Boo (c.1764 - 1784), from the Palau Islands (modern Micronesia). Captain Henry Wilson brought him back to England in 1783, having spent three months on the islands where his vessel was shipwrecked. Lee Boo died of small pox soon afterwards. After Georgiana Keate (1770 - 1850), daughter of landscape painter George Keate (1727-97). She married John Henderson (1764 - 1843), the patron of Girtin and Turner and became mother of John Henderson (1797 - 1878).

This is one of those extraordinary personages termed Conquerors; and may be thought great like Alexander, he having been where ambition has destroyed numbers; as tho' mankind was only made to be cut to Pieces. Such we call a Hero, a Warrior, a General, or Mankiller. N° 2. This is the head of an Eastern Chief. The Chiefs of which place is under great Subjection of Lacks of Rupees and Berguders or else Deposed of their Crowns; Torn from their families or Starved by our Modern Conquerors: which has been the case lately, he is called Tulgagee Mahah Rajah. Captain Henry Wilson when he stayed in the Palau Islands, now known as Belau, after the shipwreck of his East India Company packet Antelope. Wilson and his crew became friendly with the Palauans, especially the high chief of Koror, the ibedul, known by the crew as Abba Thule. Abba Thule's second son, Prince Lee Boo, was chosen to sail to England with the crew. They left the islands on 12 November 1783. Lee Boo survived only six months in England. He died of smallpox and was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's, Rotherhithe, where his grave can still be seen.
