A carriage travelling down road in foreground, a barge is moored to the right. William Beilby (1740-1819) was a British glassworker known to have produced eminent enamelled glass during the later half of the 18th century. He was brought up in Durham and then later sent as an apprentice to Birmingham until his father's business failed forcing the family to move in 1757 to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to start again. The family then moved again in 1778 to London, then to Scotland. During this period, the family produced no more glass, but Beilby painted more of his exquisite water colours. The engraver, Francis Jukes (1745-1812) was a very early specialist in aquatint, which he learnt from Paul Sandby (1731-1809).

The Siege of Colchester of 1648, part of the English Civil War, saw a Parliamentary victory led by Sir Thomas Fairfax. Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle were found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to death by firing squad. The claims were that Lucas had executed Parliamentary prisoners in cold blood; that he had broken his parole given by the First Civil War; and that the Royalists had continued to fight in an indefensible position. Within days of their execution, pamphlets were produced pronouncing Lucas and Lisle as martyrs to the Royal cause.

Born into a family of nurserymen in Twickenham, Spyers is believed to have surveyed Horace Walpole's gardens at Strawberry Hill for the family, before starting to work for Capability Brown in 1764. While Brown was Chief Gardener at Hampton Court Spyers compiled two albums of watercolours of the palace and Bushy Park which Catherine the Great of Russia purchased for 1,000 roubles in 1778. The albums were rediscovered at the beginning of this century and were loaned to Hampton Court for an exhibition in 2016. Spyers publishing this set and a similar series of local gentlemen's houses in 1786, both aquatinted by Francis Jukes (1747-1812). When he died (in apartments at the palace) he was described as 'Surveyor of Hampton Court'.

Lymne Castle, with a distant View of the French Coast.
Lymne Castle, with a distant View of the French Coast. It is situated on the descent of a Hill, about two miles West of Hythe: Its remains bear marks of great Antiquity, but when, or by whom founded, is not certain: It has been suppos'd to be the famous Portius Lemanis; but that the Sea had retired from its spacious Haven, once a Harbour for 250 Danish Vessels, Anno 893. Here it was that Prince Edward, exacted the Oath from the Barons of the Cinque Ports.

Pub.d Aug.t 8 1788 by I. Holl, Printseller, High Street, Worcester.
Aquatint with large margins; printed in sepia. 240 x 190mm (9½ x 7½").
'Sir Edmund Mason, or the Knight Poker; a lunatic of Cheltenham'. Mason (d.1801) has been called the 'English Quixote', being convinced that he was the greatest general of the age, with honours heaped on him by all the royalty of Europe, especially Frederick the Great of Prussia, as displayed in this portrait. He owned the fastest race horse in the land and was in love with a princess from some far off land. He was always penniless because of the problems of cashing bills of exchange for millions. Although he always bore arms he was regarded as harmless and his manners were so impeccable that he was humoured locally. However in his later years to had to be confined for his own safety; he reconciled this in his mind by taking his confinement as the governorship of a castle.

[From an original Picture by J.Parry. Engraved by F.Jukes.]
[Published July 12th 1803 by Francis Jukes, No. 10 Howland Street _ And Vittore Zanetti, Repository of Arts, Manchester.]
Aquatint with very fine original hand colour, very large margins, proof before all letters 370 x 480mm (14½ x 18¾"), on paper watermarked 'J Ruse'. Several tears in margin, one just entering plate at bottom. Slight time staining.
Mellor Mill, a six-story cotton mill in Marple (now Greater Manchester), built by Samuel Oldknow 1793-5. Extremely rare & fine image. Oldknow (1756-1828) was a cotton manufacturer at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. Early in his career he used the 'putting-out' system of production, distributing raw cotton to spinners and yarn to weavers who worked in their own homes and workshops. This could not compete against the Indian muslin trade, so he secured money to built this factory. A financial crisis caused by the French Revolutionary Wars put him on the brink of bankrupcy, but he was saved by a partnership with Richard Arkwright. By the time this print was published the mill had over 500 employees, including a number of parish apprentices who were brought up from London. He was known as a good employer: his farming interests allowed him to supply his workers with food and he built them housing. He also introduced his own system of paper money to pay his workforce which could be exchanged for goods at the village shop or for cash via third parties. However by the time of his death he was £206,000 in debt. Oldknow also invested in the Peak Forest Canal, on which was the Marple Aqueduct, which was also the subject of an aquatint by Joseph Parry and Francis Jukes.
