Mezzotint with very large margins, platemark 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Creasing; 'CL-B' collectior's stamp verso, slight staining top.
Copy in reverse of a continental engraving by Desplaces after Nicolas Fouché. The text below explains how cupid (on the right) was brought up by nature (left) to be 'frank, sincere, humane and mild'. But after he was entrusted to Hermes (centre) he 'grew sly malignant', emulating his tutor.

Very scarce mezzotint. Plate 322 x 251mm (12¾ x 10"). Trimmed to plate along upper edge.
Adam and Eve clothed with vine leaves on a mountain-top. Adam standing on the left, looking up to left and gesturing outwards as he explains why he ate from the forbidden fruit; whilst Eve kneels beside him and the serpent slithers along the ground between them.

Charles Dietrich Eberhard Konig (1774-1851), a German naturalist who came to England in 1800 to organize the collections of Queen Charlotte. He then became assistant to Dryander, librarian to Joseph Banks, before beoming assistant keeper of natural history in the British Museum in 1807 and keeper in 1813. In 1837 the Department of Natural History was divided into three branches; Konig took charge of Geology and Mineralogy, a post he held until his death. His 'Icones fossilium sectiles' (1820-5) is a classic text in that field. 'E.H. Eddis' is likely Eden Upton Eddis.

A frontispiece to 'The Overture of the Right Honourable the Earl of Kelly'. The scene depicts two putti playing a violin and horn within a woodland landscape, with an open musical score on the ground below to the right. The title 'Earl of Kelly' is one of the peerage titles of in the Peerage of Scotland, created in 1619 for Sir Thomas Erskine, who was Captain of the Guard and Groom of the Stool for James VI.. It is named after Barony of Kellie in Fife, Scotland.

The Virgin Mary visits Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. They are attended by St Joachim and St Joseph. Although this is a reissue of a plate from c.1750, the BM has not beeen able to trace the original publisher.
