He used this position to campaign successfully for a reformed and more modern university curricula, expanding the subjects taught beyond the traditional mathematics and classics, to include modern history and the natural sciences.

Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682), doctor and author. After graduating from Oxford in 1627, he studied medicine at Padua and Montpellier universities, finishing his medical degree in Leiden in 1633. He settled in Norwich in 1637 and practised medicine there until his death. He also wrote on a variety of subjects: his 'Religio Medici' (The Religion of a Physician) was published without his authorisation in 1642 and was added to the the 'Papal Index Librorum Prohibitorum' the same year. Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) was a Botanist, who with Lyell persuaded Darwin to publish his Origin of Species and a forceful proponent of evolutionary theory in later controversies. He published extensively on botany and succeeded his father Sir William Jackson Hooker, as director of Kew Gardens in 1865. He was also founder of geographical botany and was awarded the highest honour of British Science. W: 1437-2.

Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1857) was a geologist. From 1823-1826 he was secretary of the Geological Society and later served as president. His highly influential Principles of Geology (1830-33) was an important source for Darwin's theories and went to many editions. He urged Darwin to publish 'Origin of Species', 1859, with Sir Joseph Hooker. He is considered the greatest geologist of his generation. W: 1835-5.
