James Holman FRS (1786-1857), known as the "Blind Traveler," was a British adventurer, author and social observer, best known for his writings on his extensive travels. He entered the British Royal Navy in 1798 and by 1807 he was appointed lieutenant. From 1819 to 1821 he journeyed through France, Italy, Switzerland, the parts of Germany bordering on the Rhine, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1822 he set off again towards Russia, returning home via Austria, Saxony, Prussia and Hanover. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Linnaean Society. His last journeys were through Spain, Portugal, Moldavia, Montenegro, Syria and Turkey.

Thomas Morton (1764-1838) was an English playwright. He originally went to London to study law at Lincoln's Inn, but abandoned his studies for playwriting.

Josslyn Francis Pennington (1834-1917), 5th and final Baron Muncaster, MP for for Cumberland West 1872-80 then Egremont from 1885-92, most famous for his involvement in the 'Dilessi Murders'. In 1870 Pennington was sightseeing near Marathon in Greece when he and his companions were abducted by brigands. He was released in order to negotiate for the others, but a bungled rescue attempt by the Greek army led to the deaths of the hostages, causing a crisis between Greece and Great Britain. Pennington's journal of the misadventure was first published in 1989, with Richmond's portrait on the cover.

Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780-1863) was Chancellor of the Exchequer at the tender age of 25. He served as a Whig under eight prime ministers, becoming Lord President of the Council and the friend and political confidante of Queen Victoria, from whom he declined a dukedom in 1857. Like his father, the 3rd Marquess built up an outstanding art collection and delighted in entertaining friends and colleagues at Bowood.
