Kriehuber 1842. Gedr. bei Joh. Hofelich
Vienne chez Artaria & Comp.ie
Uncut sheet of paper with large margins. Facsimile signature.
Robert Nicolas-Charles Bochsa (1789-1856), harpist and composer who led a colourful life. After becoming entangled in counterfeiting, fraud and forgery in France, Bochsa fled to London in 1817 and was convicted in his absence. In London, Bochsa helped found the Royal Academy of Music in 1821, but was forced to resign as the secretary of the Academy in 1826 when his criminal conviction became known. He worked as director of the Kings Theatre until causing another scandal in 1839 by eloping with Anna Bishop, wife of composer Henry Bishop. They travelled the world performing together. Bochsa was director of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples for two years, before travelling to Australia with Bishop. They arrived in Sydney at the time of the goldrush in December 1855, but only gave one concert before Bochsa died. Bishop organised an elaborate tomb for him in Camperdown Cemetery, Sydney.
For Bochsa's composition 'The Krakoviak' see ref. 21668. From the Morley Collection of Harp Music.

After making his name drawing for the Graphic newspaper he made very good money as a portrait painter, which allowed him to produce social realist paintings for his own satisfaction. He opened his own art school and 1883, as well as acting as Slade Professor of Art between 1885 and 1895. Knighted in 1907, Heromer died in 1914.

[The illustrations from Sir Thomas Hanmer's 'Works of Shakespear'.]
F.Hayman Inv. H. Gravelot Sculp.
[Oxford: University Press, c.1743-4.]
Binding strained, some plates with small tears in margins, damp staining and age-toning.
The complete set of 36 scenes engraved by Hubert Gravelot after Francis Hayman. The other three plates are a portrait of Shakespeare after Houbraken, his memorial in Holy Trinity Church at Stratford-upon-Avon and Scheemakers' 18th-century monument in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. The Oxford University Press published a deluxe six-volume illustrated edition of Shakespeare, the first complete edition to be published outside London. The fine bindings and the quality of the illustrations made the edition very popular; however Sir Thomas Hanmer (1677-1746, a Speaker of the House of Commons) had edited the text (not present here) with his own conjectures, without indictating what he had changed. 'William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion' (1997) describes the edition as ''one of the worst in the eighteenth century''.

Very slight trace of age toning to paper; a fine impression.
Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (1809 - 1892), Poet Laureate. Tennyson was made a baron in 1883, the first writer to be so honoured. At this time he wrote a number of verse plays on historical themes such as Queen Mary (1875) and Becket (1884). The great poet was generally seen as being beyond criticism but Sir Henry Irving rudely complained that, 'Tennyson is a great poet, but he cannot write plays. What a pity he tries, they are the greatest rubbish!' Remarque lower right of Tennyson's head directed to left, with slightly longer hair and beard. By Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849 - 1914), painter, watercolourist, draughtsman and etcher of portraits, landscapes, genre subjects.
