John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) was a prominent English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs throughout the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Rising from a lowly page at the court of the House of Stuart, he loyally served the Duke of York through the 1670s and early 1680s, earning military and political advancement through his courage and diplomatic skill. Churchill's role in defeating the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685 helped secure James on the throne, yet just three years later he abandoned his Catholic mentor for the Protestant Dutchman, William of Orange. Honoured for his services at William's coronation with the earldom of Marlborough, he served with further distinction in the early years of the Nine Years' War, but persistent charges of Jacobitism brought about his fall from office and temporary imprisonment in the Tower. It was not until the accession of Queen Anne in 1702, however, that Marlborough reached the zenith of is powers, and secured his fame and fortune. Becoming de facto leader of Allied forces during the War of the Spanish Succession, his victories on the fields of Blenheim (1704), Ramillies (1706), Oudenarde (1708), and Malplaquet (1709), ensured his place in history as one of Europe's great generals. Incurring Anne’s disfavour, and caught between Tory and Whig faction, Marlborough, who had brought glory and success to Anne's reign, was forced from office and into self-imposed exile. He returned to England and to influence under the House of Hanover with the accession of George I to the British throne in 1714, but following a series of strokes in later age his health gradually deteriorated, and on 16 June 1722, at Windsor Lodge, the 1st Duke of Marlborough died. The second son of Frederick III, King of Denmark, George married Princess Anne in 1683. Anne became Queen of England in 1702, but George was not made King. He was given charge of the Admiralty but had little skill. This was made worse by the chronic asthma which eventually killed him. Catherine Howard (c.1521-1542), fifth wife of Henry VIII of England. She was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason, meaning adultery committed while married to the King. Catherine was stripped of her title as queen and imprisoned in Syon House, Middlesex, through the winter of 1541. Catherine's relatives were also detained in the Tower, except her uncle Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, who had sufficiently detached himself from the scandal. All of the Howard prisoners were tried, found guilty of concealing treason, and sentenced to life imprisonment and forfeiture of goods. In time, however, they were released with their goods restored. Catherine herself remained in suspension until Parliament passed a bill of attainder, on 21 January 1542, that made it treason - punishable by death - for a queen consort to fail to disclose her sexual history to the king within 20 days of their marriage, or to incite someone to have adultery with her. This solved the matter of Catherine's supposed pre-contract and made her unequivocally guilty. Catherine was taken to the Tower of London on 10 February 1542. On 11 February, Henry signed the bill of attainder into law, and Catherine's execution was scheduled for 7 a.m. on 13 February. From Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'.

Monument Erected to the Memory of Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey.
Byley del. Fittler sculp.
Published by R. Bowyer, Historic Gallery, Pall Mall _ May 20, 1794.
Engraving, sheet 460 x 290mm (18 x 11½"). Trimmed to plate.
Obelisk shaped monument with relief sculpture, Newton reclining on top of a casket or sarcophagus decorated with frieze; he gestures towards a scroll held by two cherubs to right, a female figure relining on a globe above at top. Sir Isaac Newton FRS (1643 - 1727) was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian who is perceived and considered by a substantial number of scholars and the general public as one of the most influential men in history. His 1687 publication of the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica is considered to be among the most influential books in the history of science, laying the groundwork for most of classical mechanics. In this work, Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motions of objects on Earth and of celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws by demonstrating the consistency between Kepler's laws of planetary motion and his theory of gravitation, thus removing the last doubts about heliocentrism and advancing the scientific revolution. In mechanics, Newton enunciated the conservation principles of momentum and angular momentum. In optics, he built the first practical reflecting telescope and developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the many colours that form the visible spectrum. He also formulated an empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound. In mathematics, Newton shares the credit with Gottfried Leibniz for the development of the differential and integral calculus. He also demonstrated the generalised binomial theorem, developed the so-called "Newton's method" for approximating the zeroes of a function, and contributed to the study of power series. From Bowyer's edition of David Hume's 'History of England'. W: 2140. in the NPG. Ex Collection Norman Blackburn.

He sponsored one of the first English attempts to colonise North America, the ill-fated Roanoke colony, and led two expeditions to discover El Dorado, the City of Gold, in South America. Ralegh was also 'a soldier in Ireland; a sailor [...] celebrant of colonialism (in his 'Discoverie of the Large, Rich and Bewtiful Empire of Guiana' of 1596); a poet; a dancer; a royal favourite who brilliantly mastered the Elizabethan court rhetoric of chaste love only to plummet into disfavour after a marriage the Queen didn't like; an enthusiastic brawler who laughed throughout the Earl of Essex's execution; and atheist; and an associate of what Nicholas Popper calls "poet-ruffians". He was also [...] a prisoner, condemned to the Tower of London for his part in a plot to promote Arabella Stuart to the throne.' (Adam Smyth, 'Wrong Rivers' in TLS June 14 2013). Ver Huell 13.
