Guillaume Farel (1488-1565) was a reformer and preacher who fled France during the religious persecutions of 1523, and settled in French-speaking Switzerland, where he introduced the Reformation. Quentin Matsys (1466-1529) was a painter in the Flemish tradition and a founder of the Antwerp School. In the background a blacksmith and his forge, alluding to the legend that Matsys trained as a blacksmith before becoming a painter. Copy in same direction as Cock 1572 engraved Pictorum.
