Henry Fuseli [1741 - 1825], Swiss painter of heroic, literary and surreal themes who first came to London in 1764. He became professor of Painting (1799-1805) and then Keeper (1804-25) at the Royal Academy, where he taught a whole generation of artists, including Constable, Haydon and Lawrence. His inclination towards the fantastic was given scope in his paintings for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery.

John Howard (1726?-1790), was a prison reformer and social campaigner. He experienced imprisonment himself in France in 1756. It was not until 1773 when he became High Sherriff of Bedfordshire that he initiated an important campaign to transform prision conditions. He spent a lot of his time visiting prisons in Britain and Europe, leading him to write his influential book "The State of Prisons", first published in 1777. A highly resrved man, Howard shunned public recognition throughout his life.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) was an English organist and Baroque composer of secular and sacred music. Little is acutally known about Purcell, even the pronunciation of his name is disputed by musicians and historians alike. As a chorister at the Chapel Royal, he sung at the coronation of King Charles II; until his voice broke when he became assistant to the organ-builider John Hingson, who was keeper of wind instruments to the King. From Westminster School and his assistantship at the abbey he went on in 1679 to take Blow's position as organist, which Blow resigned in favour of his pupil, Purcell. It is believed that as
