Anne of Cleves (1515-1557), fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. When her health began to fail, Anne was allowed by Mary I to live at Chelsea Old Manor, and later died on 16 July 1557 (making her the last of Henry VIII's wives to die). Etched by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77) after the portrait by Holbein, now in the Louvre but at the time (1648) in the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, who Hollar had known since 1636. In 1644 Hollar had moved to Antwerp due to the political climate in England. Lord Arundel was also in Antwerp at this time with much of his collection, and during his eight year stay in the city Hollar made numerous prints from works in the Arundel collection such as this.

John Bastwick (1595?-1654), Puritan religious controversialist and pamphleteer. One of five bust portraits etched by Wenceslaus Hollar of writers punished for their opinions on the High Church policy of Laud. As recounted in the text here, in 1637 they were fined impossibly large sums, lost their ears, and sentenced to life imprisonment (although Bastwick, after a spell in Star Castle in the Isles of Scilly, was released in 1644). It was etched on the same plate as two of the other portraits; the copperplate, now cut, is in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Hollar (1607-77) was a Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England, from a Protestant background (although he later converted to Catholicism). Hollar's technical skill has ensured that his prints have always been keenly collected, and comprehensive collections of his work are institutions in London, Berlin and Prague.

Bonnet. This eminent naturalist was born at Geneva in 1720, in a family originally from France; but, disliking dry grammatical studies, his father provided him with a domestic tutor...Public honours were rendered to his remains by his fellow citizens, and his funeral eulogy was pronounced by his illustrious friend and kinsman M. de Saussure.

While the plate is best-known for its appearance in the famous 1754 volume of Stowe's Survey of London, it had been sold individually by the publisher John Bowles since 1728.

While this state is dated 1644, the print was first published on a broadside issued in 1639 when Charles advanced to Berwick with an army of which Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, was Commander-in-chief. In this state, the print was the frontispiece to Sir Edward Walker's 'Historical Discourses' (1705), reissued as 'Historical collections' in 1707. Etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England after meeting Arundel in Cologne in 1636. Hollar commemorated his patrons role in the campaign against Scotland by etching his portrait on horseback.

He was chosen to command the Endeavour in 1768, and made three important voyages of discovery to the South and North Pacific, which included the first British landing in Australia. He was killed in Hawaii during a skirmish. One of at least fourteen engravings made from the famous 1776 portrait of Cook by Nathaniel Dance (1735 - 1811), which was commissioned by the explorer Sir Joseph Banks (London, National Maritime Museum).

Robert Devereux (1591-1646) third Earl of Essex. He served as a Parliamentarian soldier during the Civil War, but resigned in 1646 having been overshadowed by Cromwell and Fairfax. He died from a stroke later that year.
