Duke Frederick of Wurtemburg invested with the Order of the Garter, the investiture ceremony in Stuttgart cathedral. Frederick I's ruling passion was to establish an alliance with Elizabeth I and to obtain the Order of the Garter. The Queen called him 'cousin Mumpellgart', and in 1597 allowed his election to the Order of the Garter, but the actual ceremony of his investiture did not take place until November, 1603, when the Garter was conferred on him in his own capital city of Stuttgart by a special embassy from James I.
