The Blessings of Military Law-Givers.
[Monogram of Paul Pry - John Phillips?] Esq.r.
Pub by S. Gans, 15 Southampton St. Strand, July 28 1829_Sole publisher of Paul Pry's Caricatures.
Etching with fine hand colour. 240 x 355mm (9½ x 14"). Trimmed to printed border and laid on album paper.
A court scene with the accused (a coachman) being the only civilian, the judge and lawyer all wearing huge bearskins. Wellington stands next to the accused, dressed as a Grenedier Guard. According to the prosecutor, the coachman was guilty of 'breaking the line of a Corporal's guard, my Lud, to the great damage and detriment of the military honor of this vast empire'. A satire of Wellington as a military autocrat. Although 'Paul Pry' was initially a pseudonym of William Heath (1794-1840), this print is a pirate, probably by John Philips. Eventually Heath gave up the monogram because of its wide use.

[Henry Hunt] Civic Combatants.
[Henry Hunt] Civic Combatants.
A. Sharpshooter [John Phillips] fec.
Pub. by S. Gans, 15 Southampton St. Strand June 1, 1829.
Fine coloured etching. 245 x 355mm (9¾ x 14"), with large margins. Slightly creased down centre.
Henry Hunt, in a rage, hurls a jar of his 'Hunts Matchless Blacking' at Lord Mayor William Thompson's head. Thompson, in his gown, smiles and raises the City mace in both hands defensively. At Hunt's feet is a paper: 'Petition against increased Duty on Coals'; just behind him is a pugnacious coal-heaver (Lord Durham) clutching a blacking-jar. Behind the Mayor is a barrister in wig and gown, probably the Recorder (Newman Knowlys). Henry Hunt the demagogue is here conflated with another Henry Hunt, one of the City Auditors, who presented a petition to the Lords through Lord Durham alleging that obstacles had prevented his auditing of City Accounts and of mismanagement of City Estates. The petition by his feet relates to the City's request for a tax on coals towards the expanses of the new London Bridge, part of Hunt's objections.

Stadler; for this second edition the plates were re-engraved by John Hill, with only slight differences. The German-born painter had already made his name in Paris before moving to London in 1771, where he became the principal scenery designer for Garrick at London's Drury Lane Theatre. Also in the theatre, he invented the 'Eidophusikon', a moving panorama enhanced with mirrors, displayed with accompanying music.
