''Great Britain'' Built at Bristol 1837-1843 [...]

Scarce etching, very large margins. 190 x 270mm (7½ x 10½"). Some spotting.
An amateur etching of SS Great Britain, surrounded by vignette details. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she was the largest passenger ship in the world when she was completed in 1845, but here she is shown being used as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk in the Falkland Islands. Scuttled in 1937, she was brought back to England in 1970 and restored. Dr. Leonard Harrison Matthews (1901-86) drew this sketch when he was a zoologist with the 'Discovery Investigations' (1924-9) in the Falklands and South Georgia, studying the biology of whales and southern elephant seals. In 1931 he published a paper, 'South Georgia, the Empire's Sub-Antarctic Outpost'; over fifty years later his last publication was 'Mammals in the British Isles' (1982).

On the reverse is an etching os a woman sleeping in an armchair, with monogram 'UNK' Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she was the largest passenger ship in the world when she was completed in 1845, but here she is shown being used as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk in the Falkland Islands. Scuttled in 1937, she was brought back to England in 1970 and restored. A chart of the approaches to Macao, drawn by William Bligh when he was Master of HMS Resolution, Cook's ship on his Third Voyage. The famous 'Mutiny on the Bounty' was nearly 20 years later in Bligh's career. The chart was published in the Official Account, 'Voyage to the Pacific Ocean', first published in 1785. The watermarked 1801 is a sign of the enduring interest in Cook's discoveries. Bligh's original chart is now lost.

Rare lithograph, sheet 350 x 215mm. 13¾ x 8½". Minor staining, with horizontal fold between image and inscription. Otherwise good.
A hot-air balloon flight in London using the design of the French brothers Joseph-Michel (1740-1810) and Jacques-Etienne (1745-1799) Montgolfier, whose balloon was used in the first manned free flight ascent on 21 November 1783. The Royal Surrey Gardens was a pleasure gardens in Kennington, London, slightly east of The Oval. The gardens were the grounds of the manor house of Walworth, and, as can be seen in this image, included a lake of about 3 acres. The site was acquired in 1831 by impresario Edward Cross to be the location of his new Surrey Zoological Gardens, using animals from his menagerie at Exeter Exchange, in competition with the new London Zoo in Regent's Park. In the Museum of London, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
