The Round Tower of Pacco Qillo, a fort built by Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhoro c.1768 when he founded the city of Hyderabad in Southern India. From 'Sketches in Scinde' by Lieutenant William Edwards of the 86th or Royal County Down Regiment, and aide-de-camp to General Sir Charles Napier. Edwards was present during Napier's conquest of Sindh Province in northern Pakistan in 1842. This example is from the subscription edition, with the plates presented like watercolours. Plate 4 from a set of six tinted lithographs after Lieutenant Frederick Rice Stack, 'Souvenir of the Emperor Napoleon, consisting of six drawings made in the Island of Saint Helena..' A attractive scene on the island of Saint Helena associated with the last days of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821), who was exiled to the island in 1815 and died at Longwood House. Titles in English and French. Stack is known to have served with the Saint Helena regiment as a Lieutenant from January 1842 until he was promoted to Captain on 5 August 1853. He transferred to the 65th regiment and subsequently served in New Zealand from 1857 until 1862. He is now perhaps best known for his 'Views in the Province of Auckland, New Zealand'. Toning to edges.
Fort Charlotte on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent, which stood on Berkshire Hill, Edinboro, 6000 feet above sea level. The fort was constructed between 1763 (when the British recovered the island) and 1806. The fort is now a historical site. Plate from 'Four Years' residence in the West Indies' by Frederick William N. Bayley (1808-52), who accompanied his father (a soldier) to Barbados in the 1820s. Bayley writes in his book that 'perhaps I could not have been on a more delightful spot than the citadel at Forth Charlotte'.
