Portrait of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, 1st Bt (1769-1839); profile in an oval. He served as flag captain to Admiral Lord Nelson, and commanded HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The dying Nelson's famous remark of "Kiss me, Hardy" was directed at him. Hardy went on to reach the apex of the naval service, becoming First Naval Lord at the Admiralty in November 1830 and reaching the rank of Vice-Admiral of the Blue in January 1837. From a periodical.

John Harriott (1745-1817) Projector of the London Thames Police. Influential in the founding of the river Police to protect the trade on the Thames. An interesting man who had seen action and survived a shipwreck before he was 25 years old. He attempted to improve his lot in India and America and while having not trained as a lawyer became a Magistrate. NPG: D8207.

The Battle of Marengo, fought on 14 June 1800, saw a decisive French victory over the Austrians. Napoleon seen here on his horse leading the surprise attack near the end of the day, driving the Austrians out of Italy, and enhancing his political position in Paris as First Consul of France.

Sir William Ouseley (1769-1842) was a British Orientalist. In 1810 he accompanied his brother, Sir Gore Ouseley, as Secretary to Persia, and continued his studies in Persian literature, which he started when in Paris in 1787. See Ref: 19052 for his brother.

James Read (1777-1852), the missionary in Cape Colony and political activist. In November 1798 he set sail for the South Seas under the aegis of the London Missionary Society. His ship was captured and he managed to return to London before setting sail again and arriving in Cape Town in 1800.

Sir James Hawkins Whitshed (1762-1849) was Admiral of the Fleet, of the British Royal Navy. He served during the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1803 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and four years later he went on to be Commander-in-Chief at Cork. In 1821 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth.
