Number 15 from a series of plates of caricatures of the Roman court and its foreign visitors; a man with a book under his right arm. After Pier Leone Ghezzi (1675-1755), regarded as the first professional caricaturist. Based in Rome, he moved freely amongst the Italian nobility, even associating with Pope Clement XI. His satirical portraits include one of Vivaldi and several British grand tourists. A native of Alaska. From 'An authentic narrative of a voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty’s ships Resolution and Discovery during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780 : in search of a North-West passage between the continents of Asia and America…', by William Ellis, published 1782. Ellis was a surgeon's mate during Cook's third voyage, first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution, and gives quite a good history of this expedition. His account was published two years before the 'official' version. Ellis was also an amateur artist of some skill and the illustrations in the book are after his own drawings; they include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska and three of the Northwest Coast.

After Rev Matthew William Peters (1742 - 1814), partner to 'Of such is the kingdom of God'. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales. Queen Anne (1665-1714) was the second daughter of James II and she married Prince George of Denmark in 1683. She was intimate and dependent on Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, whose husband, the Duke, controlled the war against France. However, in 1711, she dismissed the Marlboroughs, largely because of her sympathy with Tory opposition to the Duke's conduct of the war. The Regent, seated sideways on his chair, is in back view, holding out his hand in an oratorical gesture towards a ragged and despairing John Bull, who stands hat in hand addressing him. He says: "Why you unatural Grumbler after I have done all I could to get rid of your Money you Still grumble did I not give you a Fète did I not Build you a Bridge did I not Treat you with a Smell of all the nice things at my Feast did I not sign the Corn Bill did I not refuse the [scored through] your Address have I not drank whole Pipes of Wine for fear it should be waste'd have I not spent all your money because you should not spend it your self have you not got the Income Tax to keep you sober, & as for your Dress the Thinner the better for the Sumer Season so Johnny go Home to work its all for the good of your Country." The Regent wears a powdered wig and whiskers, a tight-waisted coat with small pointed tails over very tight breeches, sleeves puffed at the shoulders. John has no coat, wears a tattered waistcoat, shirt, and breeches, has one ragged stocking with a pad over the knee, and one bare leg covered with a twisted straw rope, with dilapidated shoes, thus resembling a destitute day labourer instead of a 'cit' or farmer. Thomas Augustine Arne (1710 - 1778), composer, in a small oval on the side of a pedestal supporting an urn, from which a flaming phoenix emerges. Arne's most famous work is the patriotic song, 'Rule, Britannia!'. He is buried at St Paul's, Covent Garden, London. This portrait, after Robert Dunkarton (1744 - 1811?), was probably a frontispiece to a posthumous edition of one of his works.

Probably a portrait of Virginia tobacco trade merchant and financier Edward Athawes (d.1767), sitting three-quarter to left, with a tricorn in his lap. His right arm is curled around his cane. Edward Athawes was a prominent London merchant in the tobacco trade, which financed American plantations, (owners including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington) with sizeable loans from London. When tobacco prices dropped precipitously in the 1750s, many plantations struggled to remain financially solvent. Jefferson, on the verge of losing his own farm, aggressively espoused various conspiracy theories. Though never verified, Jefferson accused London merchants of unfairly depressing tobacco prices and forcing Virginia farmers to take on unsustainable debt loads. Chaloner Smith quotes Bromley's description of a second state with Dickinson's name added. This suggests that Dickinson engraved this when still working for Carington Bowles. He also describes another Edward Athawes, clerk for the Cordwainer's Company, who died in 1796; neither the dress nor the need for 'memory' suits that attribution, CS: Dickinson 2. Banditti scene after John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-79), published soon after the artist's death. Influenced by the works of Salvator Rosa (immensely popular during the period), Mortimer incorporated Rosa's disturbing banditti and occult subject matter in the 1770s. This print is usually regarded as a generic banditti scene: a preparatory drawing in the collection of Richard Payne Knight (now in the British Museum) was etched by Robert Blyth and published in November 1780 with the title 'Banditti Returning'. However, a related painting by Mortimer (Newcastle, Hatton Gallery) is titled 'The Sacrifice of Polyxena'. John Thomas Barber Beaumont (1774-1841), army officer, painter, author, and philanthropist, member of the Society of Antiquaries & Geological Society. He was miniature painter to the Duke of Clarence, the future king William IV of Great Britain. In 1803 he raised a rifle corps named The Duke of Cumberland's Sharp Shooters, which later became Queen Victoria's Rifles. As a businessman Beaumont founded the Provident Institution and Savings Bank in 1806 and the County Fire and the Provident Life insurance offices in 1807.

Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859). In December 1819 he was returned as an MP for Cambridge in an election controlled by the Duke of Rutland, owner of Belvoir. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced). Bias weeps while condemning someone to death. Bias of Priene (6th century BC) was one of the Seven Sages of Greece, renouned for his probity. An illustration of a tapestry after Andrzej Stech (1635-97) that once belonged to the bench of judges in the Artus Court in Gdansk, Poland. The story comes from 'Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers' by Diogenes Laërtius (3rd century AD).

Action off the Isle of Man during the Seven Years' War in which Captain Elliott engaged a French squadron headed for the north coast of Ireland. The French were commanded by 'the famous Thurot' (Francois Thurot, 1727-1760), privateer, smuggler and captain, who was killed during the battle. From of a series of prints made from paintings by marine painter Francis Swain (c.1719-82) recording celebrated naval battles which were probably reduced copies of other engravings issued by the same publisher. Parker 66 (not in, although a larger engraving, probably from the same picture by Swain, is listed and dated to c.1770)
