Portrait of Queen Anne (1665-1714), half-length in an oval, wearing small crown, pearl necklace, ermine-lined robes with jewels. In 1707 Anne signed the Act of Union, creating the Kingdom of Great Britain; here England and Scotland are still separate kingdoms. Her support of the union contributed significantly to its acceptance by both kingdoms, while her staunch support of the duke of Marlborough in the face of opposition made it possible for him to use his skills to re-establish the balance of power in Europe. Engraved and published after Kneller's portrait, by the Amsterdam-based printmaker Pieter van Gunst.

King Edward VI (1537-1553), son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. Scholarly and firmly Protestant, he ruled during his minority with the help of a council, but was dominated first by the Duke of Somerset as Lord Protector, and later by the Duke of Northumberland. The latter induced Edward to will the crown of Lady Jane Grey, in order to ensure the Protestant succession. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from a design by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

Elizabeth I (1533-1603), queen of England and Ireland, reigned 1558-1603. The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth came to the throne on the death of her half-sister, Mary I. Her long reign, beginning in 1558, saw the secure establishment of the Church of England. It was characterised by relative peace and prosperity, a great increase in foreign trade and exploration, the defeat of the Armada, and a flourishing literary culture epitomised by Shakespeare. Despite receiving many proposals of marriage, Elizabeth never married and became legendary as the 'virgin queen'.

She was involved in many political intrigues during the English Civi War, and became second wife to James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle. She is known for disclosing to her cousin Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex of the King's intended arrest of the five members of Long Parliament, which enabled Essex and the other to escape. She was a political friend of Strafford and Pym. From Gunst's series of ten plates after van Dyck, made 1713-15, from the Cracherode bequest.

Bust portrait of King William III (1650 - 1702) The posthumous son of the Stadholder William II of Holland and Mary, daughter of Charles I, William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde in 1677. In 1688 he accepted an invitation by a group of leading statesmen to land in Britain with an armed force; after the flight of James II he was crowned king, jointly with his wife, in 1689. William's life-long devotion to the fight against French expansionism benefited from additional resources after he became King. Although he lacked warmth and physical presence he showed considerable political, diplomatic and military ability. Once in the collection of Reverend J. Burleigh James of Knowbury Park, Shropshire. An important collection of prints of all schools and periods, his collection of prints by Rembrandt and Dürer was particularly notable.
