Aikin (1747-1822) was a physician and writer, who practiced medicine until a stroke ended his medical career in 1796. It was during his spare time while working as a doctor that he produced many of the works for which he is best known, including the 'Description', a valuable account of the Manchester area at a time of rapid industrialization.

Ranelagh Gardens, adjoining the Pensioners' Hospital at Chelsea, became a popular place of leisure and entertainment. Balls, concerts and dinners were held almost daily. During the masquerade depicted here, participants were disguised or in fancy dress, often favouring Oriental costume. This Oriental taste was reflected by Ranelagh's 'China House' created in 1750. After Antonio Canaletto (1697 - 1768), who lived and worked in London during the 1740s and 1750s.

The Portrait of the Prince (afterw.ds Edw.5.th) is the only one known of him, & has been engraved by Vertue among the Heads of the Kings. The Person in a Cap & Robe of State is probably Richard D. of Gloucester, as he resembles the King, and as Clarence was always too great an Enemy of the Queen to be distinguished by her Brother. The Book was printed in 1477, when Clarence was in Ireland, & in the beginning of the next year he was murder'd.

Kew Gardens originated in the exotic garden at Kew Park formed by Lord Capel John of Tewkesbury. It was enlarged and extended by Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales, the widow of Frederick, Prince of Wales, for whom Sir William Chambers built several garden structures. One of these, the lofty Chinese pagoda built in 1761 still remains. From Chambers's 'Plans, elevations, sections and perspective views of the gardens and buildings at Kew...'
