Agrippina, surrounded by her Children, weeping over the Ashes of Germannicus.
Agrippina, surrounded by her Children, weeping over the Ashes of Germannicus.
B. West R.A. pinxit, 1773, London. V. Green, Engraver in Mezzotinto to his Majesty Fecit. From the Original Picture in the Possession of A. Vesey.
Publish'd by J. Boydell, Cheapside July 23. 1774.
Mezzotint, very rare open letter title, 610 x 430mm. 24 x 17". Margin with tears, one just into plate at right.
The widow Agrippina, seated, mourns with her head resting against an urn inscribed with her husband Germanicus's name, comforted by one of her daughters, who touches her neck. A naked boy stands at her feet, leaning back with his hand on his brother's head; behind two young women stand, their arms around each other. A young man beside them buries his head in his hands, another son at the left bows his head; a crown, laurels and a statue of an eagle in the right foreground. In 5 AD Agrippina married Germanicus, her second cousin and step-grandson of the Emperor Augustus. Agrippina had nine children by Germanicus, including the future emperor Gaius (Caligula). Agrippina was very popular among the Roman people, not least because of her marriage to the much-loved Germanicus, whose ashes she brought back to Rome after his death in the east in AD 21. Her strength and popularity aroused the suspicions of the emperor Tiberius and his right-hand man Sejanus, head of the Praetorian guards and she and her eldest son were banished to the Pontian islands on the Bay of Naples in AD 29. Four years later, following a beating so severe that she was blinded in one eye, Agrippina starved herself to death. Her popularity, however, ensured a decent burial, and she was laid to rest at Rome in the Mausoleum of Augustus After Benjamin West (1738 - 1820).

Scene in a Country Town at the Time of a Race.
Drawn by W. Mason Esq.r. Engrav'd by V Green.
Publish'd March 27th 1789 by F. Brydon, Printseller & Framemaker, opposite Northumberland House, Charing Cross, London.
A very large & rare etching, with hand colour. Sheet 445 x 600mm (17½ x 23¾"). Trimmed to plate; worm holes filled, mainly in title area.
A chaotic scene in a High Street, probably York as the artist William Mason was Canon Residentiary of York and Rector of Aston. A stagecoach and personal carriages crash into each other, much to the amusement of spectators looking from the windows of the Red Lion coaching inn. Adding to the noise are coach passengers beating a drum and blowing a trumpet, a fiddler and a ballad singer. Other figures include a gipsy woman sitting on the pavement, a Jewish pedlar clutching his box on the roof of the stagecoach and a man riding a racehorse through the melée. The BM's example is trimmed to the image, but has a 1908 report that gives the title and describes an earlier state, ''Publish'd July 26th 1783 by V. Green, N°29 Newman Street, Oxford Street & Sold by F Brydon, Printseller, N° 7, opposite Northumberland House, Charing Cross, London''. See Ref: 31344 for Frank Paton's Christmas Card design.

[The Honble. Arch.d Douglas.]
[The Honble. Arch.d Douglas.]
G. Willison pinxit. Val. Green fecit.
Publish'd Octr. 22nd 1770, by G. Willison Greek Street, Soho, London.
Proof mezzotint, scratched letters and publication line, 422 x 605mm 16½ x 23¾ inches. Minor rubbing, minor printing imperfection in the plate in Justice's robes, stains lower left. In the final state the engraving carries a dedication, "To his Grace Charles Duke of Queensberry and Dover, This plate is most humbly Dedicated by His Grace's most obedient and obliged humble Servant. George Willison".
Allegorical portrait, bust-length to front within oval, held by figure of Justice, resting the image on carved pedestal and trampling Calumny beneath her feet; proof. Archibald Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas [1748–1827] litigant and politician. The relief medallions of Camden and Mansfield are references to the final decision in one of the eighteenth century's most famous legal battles. The Douglas Cause, was the challenge to Archibald's inheritance by the Hamiltons, who argued that he and his brother were supposititious. The Hamilton lawyers put together a plausible circumstantial argument that Archibald was actually Jacques Louis Mignon, the son of a Parisian glassworker, who had disappeared in July 1748. The case was litigated at great length and expense (the two sides spent £54,000 between them). It attracted tremendous interest, especially in Scotland. Not only was a large estate at stake, but many felt that requiring Archibald Douglas to in effect prove his identity raised a question that could endanger the security of inheritance in general. In Scotland the Douglas side enjoyed broad popular support, with James Boswell an especially eager partisan, though many of the literati favoured the Hamilton side. In 1767 the court of session decided by the casting vote of the lord president against Douglas. Douglas appealed to the House of Lords which, following the opinions of law lords Mansfield and Camden, reversed the decision without a division.
