A sea battle in the West Indies, fought during the Seven Years' War (1756-63), with a single British ship taking on and defeating three French vessels. Richard Tyrell (1716?-1766, later Rear-Admiral) spent most of his naval career in the West Indies. Resigning his commission in 1766 he died of fever on his return to England and was buried at sea. A memorial was erected in Westminster Abbey. Although the painter is named as Swaine, it is in fact Richard Paton. This is a smaller version of the engraving by Canot published in 1750

Three young ladies, two elderly women and a pug dog are clustered fawning around a clergyman, to the dismay of a young ex-soldier with a wooden leg who sits disgruntled at the other end of the sofa with the head of a hound in his lap. Oval portrait of Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343 - 1400), English author, poet, philosopher, bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. Although he wrote many works, he is best remembered for his unfinished frame narrative 'The Canterbury Tales'. Sometimes called the father of English literature, Chaucer is credited by some scholars as the first author to demonstrate the artistic legitimacy of the vernacular English language, rather than French or Latin. Jean Baptiste Charles Henri Hector, comte d'Estaing (1729-1794), French general and admiral. After France entered the American War of Independence in 1778, d'Estaing led a fleet to aid the Americans, participating in unsuccessful sieges of Newport, Rhode Island (1778) and Savannah (1779). During the French Revolution, d'Estaing's sypathy for the French royal family led to his execution. He served in India and was captured. He was successful in Muscat and Sumatra. Before he was guillatined he wrote: "After my head falls off send it to the British, they will pay a good deal for it!"

Oval portrait of Sir Francis Drake (1540 - 1596), Admiral and circumnavigator. The most famous of all English seafarers, Drake earned his fame and fortune through his skilful seamanship and outstandingly successful piracy. His circumnavigation of the globe from 1577-81 involved a number of very profitable raids on Spanish ships and ports. Drake's increasingly frequent and serious attacks during the 1580s were an important factor contributing to Philips II's decision to launch the Armada against England in 1588. Drake served as vice-admiral of the English fleet which defeated the Armada. For the English translation of Rapin de Thoyras's 'History of England', John Harrison 1784-89. See BL HS.74/934.

Oval portrait of George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759), composer. Born in Saxony, Handel settled in London in 1712 where for nearly fifty years he poured out opera, oratorios, concertos and occasional music. His Messiah, first performed in Dublin in 1742, became a national institution within his lifetime. For the English translation of Rapin de Thoyras's 'History of England', John Harrison 1784-89. Oval portrait of King Henry VIII (1491 - 1547; reigned 1509-47). Henry VIII succeeded his father Henry VII in 1509. He is well known for his six marriages and for ordering the dissolution of religious houses which took place between 1535 and 1539. Aided by his ministers, Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, his reign was characterised by ambition abroad and ruthlessness at home. His quest for a male heir and a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon led to his establishing himself as head of the Church in England in place of the Pope in 1535.
