Battle scene towards the end of the siege of Fort St Philip (which dominated the great natural harbour of Mahon in Minorca), which lasted from August 1781 until February 1782, when the garrison of James Murray, ravaged by scurvy, laid down their arms. Murray's conduct during the siege (which included turning down a secret bribe of £1 million sterling to surrender from the French commander de Crillon) earned him the nickname Old Minorca from his troops. Murray was made a full general in 1783 and retired to his residence near Battle in Sussex. Engraved after a design by Jean-Baptiste Le Paon (1736/8-85).

From 'Recueil des Costumes de Tours les Ouvrages Dramatiques représentés avec succès sur les grands théâtres de Paris.' Each issue contained 5 to 20 plates, lithographed by G. Engelmann after A. Garneray, A. Vizentini, A. Faure, H. Lecomte, Leprince, Albert, Fauconnier, Grandville, etc., depicting actors in costumes from plays, operas and ballets for the years 1819-1825.

After becoming a member of the Society of United Irishmen in 1796, O'Connor was captured during an attempt to reach France to petition for support for an Irish revolution. After a period in prison he was sent into exile in 1802, and was welcomed in Paris by Napoleon, who made him a General of Division in the French army, as illustrated here. In 1804 he went to Brest to join an expeditionary army intended for the invasion of Ireland, but when the plan fell through he retired from the army, although he offered his services to Napoleon during the Hundred Days.

It appears these gentlemen travelled to Paris together in 1822.
