[Landscape by a river, with Roman temple on hilltop]
S. Gessner inv et f [1767/8] Etching, platemark 170 x 250mm (6¾ x 10"), with large margins. Plate seven from Salomon Gessner's series of etchings 'Folge der Landschaften in antikem Geschmack'. Gessner (1730-88) achieved international fame as a writer and etched illustrations to his texts as well as producing standalone series of etchings such as these, as well as paintings and drawings (of which the most significant collection is in the Kunsthaus Zurich). His son Conrad Gessner was also a significant artist.
