Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803), diplomatist and art collector. The epitome of the era of the Grand Tourist (his grand tour lasted thrity-five years), Hamilton became envoy-extraordinary in Naples from where he collected widely and developed a great interest in volcanoes. Late in life he married Emma Hamilton, who later began an affair with Horatio Nelson.

The portrait, after Federico Zuccaro (1539/40-1609), was published in Edmund Lodge's 'Portraits Of Illustrious Personages Of Great Britain. Engraved From Authentic Pictures...'. The firm of Lackington, Hughes (el al) had published the first edition of Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' the same year.

Barnabas Shaw (1821-1902) was sent by the Missionary Committee to join his father in South Africa. His first appointment in Africa was to the Cape Town Circuit, from whence he removed to Raithby, where failure of voice began to trouble him.

Sir Edward Thornbrough (1754-1834), naval officer. Serving for nearly fifty years at sea, he fought in the American War of Independence, commanded the frigate 'Hebe' on which the future William IV served as lieutenant in 1785; helped thwart the planned French invasion of Ireland in 1798 and guarded Sicily and blockaded Toulon during the Napoleonic Wars. In later years he was commander-in-chief of the Irish station and then in Portsmouth.
