Ernest Augustus I (1771-1837) was King of Hanover from 1837 until his death. He was the eighth child of George III. He became King of Hanover when his niece, Victoria, became Queen of the United Kingdom, ending the personal union between Britain and Hanover that had lasted since 1714. He was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale in 1799 and married in 1815, much to the disapproval of his mother, Queen Charlotte, the twice-widowed Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
