He was patron of music and arts and was considered a sophisticated writer on music and of music. His library, one of the largest in the world, was destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. His most famous composition is a setting of the Crux fidelis, a work that remains highly popular during Lent amongst church choirs. His daughter, Catherine of Braganza, marrieed Charles II of England. In politics and military he led the Portuguese Restoration War against Spain, and was so successful that on the eve of his death in 1656, the Portuguese empire had reached its zenith spanning almost 3 billion acres.
