Dervorguilla de Balliol, lady of Galloway (d.1290), noblewoman and benefactor. After the death of her husband John de Balliol, Dervorguilla brought together the endowments and formulated the statutes of Balliol College, Oxford, a house of scholars founded as an indirect result of transgressions committed by her husband against the bishop of Durham in 1255. One of a set of 'Founders of Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, Royal Exchange, and Charterhouse' (this impression, bearing the name of H. Parker, is from the final state). CS 34

John de Balliol (b. before 1208, d.1268), magnate and benefactor. As the result of a conflict with Balliol's powerful neighbour, the bishop of Durham, he submitted himself to a public whipping in front of the cathedral church door and undertook to maintain scholars studying at Oxford. Balliol made some provision for this before his death, leaving further endowments in his will, and his widow Dervorguilla formulated the statutes of what became Balliol College in 1282. One of a set of forty-five 'Founders of Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, Royal Exchange, and Charterhouse' (this impression, bearing the name of H. Parker, is from the final state). CS 34

Pair of engravings, each sheet approx 190 x 150mm (7½ x 6"). Trimmed, losing text; tipped into album sheets.
Frederick V, king of Bohemia and count Palatine of the Rhine (1596-1632), and his wife Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1662). They married in London in 1613, and Frederick accepted the crown of Bohemia in 1619, but just after a year later his reign as king ended following the Battle of White Mountain, and they spent the rest of their lives in exile (mostly at the Hague). For this reason they are nicknamed 'The Winter King' and 'The Winter Queen'. Pair of British mezzotints after portraits by Michiel van Mierevelt (1567-1641), Dutch artist who became official painter to the stadholder court and painted many portraits of members of the House of Orange Nassau, as well as foreign sitters such as Sir Dudley Carleton and Edward Cecil, Viscount Wimbledon.

Thomas Rotherham (1423-1500), appointed Bishop of Rochester in 1468, Lincoln in 1472, and then Archbishop of York in 1480 until his death. He twice served as Lord Chancellor. After the Wars of the Roses his patronage saved Lincoln College Oxford, which had recieved its charter from the deposed Lancastrians. John Richmond Webb (1667-1724), army officer. In 1710 Webb was appointed captain and governor of the Isle of Wight, a position he held until 1715. In the parliamentary election of 1713 he was returned as tory candidate for both Ludgershall in Wiltshire and Newport, Isle of Wight, choosing to sit for the latter until the election of 1715. He was removed as governor owing to the fall in tory fortunes that followed the death of Queen Anne in 1714. CS: 59-I
