Harry Carey.
J. Worsdale pinx / J Faber Fecit [1729]
Mezzotint, platemark 190 x 150mm (7½ x 6"). Small margins. Rare.
Henry Carey (1687-1743), poet and songwriter. Allegedly the illegitimate son of the George Savile, marquess of Halifax, Carey is best known for his satires and comedies for the theatre today. He also taught music and published poetry. The great music historian Charles Burney wrote of him: 'Honest Harry Carey … invented many very pleasing and natural melodies, which neither obscured the sense of the words, nor required much science to hear'. A defender of indigenous musical traditions, Carey attacked Italian opera, and sometimes paticular continental performers, in satires like 'Faustina, or, The Roman Songstress'. Despite the great success of works such as 'the Dragon of Wantley' (1737), whose popularity eclipsed even 'The Beggar's Opera', Carey committed suicide soon after the death of his son in 1743. Sold by C. Hitch in Paternoster Row, London, and by S. Parsons at Newcastle Under Lime.
Mezzotint, platemark 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Small margins; glued to backing sheet at corners; rubbed.
John Leveson-Gower, first Earl Gower (1694-1754), politician. Leader of the Tories in the Lords in the 1730s, after Walpole's fall he was the one Tory to take high office (as lord privy seal and a privy councillor, from 1742) in the new ministry, as delebrated here. However, he resigned in December 1743, soon after this print was published. He subsequently regained his position as lord privy seal and held it until his death. Gower's proximity to the whig administration provoked suspicion that he had deserted Tory principles (Dr Johnson included him in his dictionary definition for 'renegado' although the printer removed the reference). Mr Cave Underhill ye Famous Comedian in ye Habit of Obadiah ye Fanatick Elder.
R Bing pinx J. Faber Junior fecit 1712.
Rare mezzotint, sheet 130 x 85mm (5 x 3¼"). Trimmed; false margins added.
Cave Underhill (1634-1713), actor, here playing the role of Obadiah in 'The Committee' by Sir Robert Howard. Underhill had an acting career of almost fifty years, in which he specialised in eccentric and stupid characters. In the words of Colley Cibber, Underhill was 'a correct and natural Comedian, his particular Excellence was in Characters that may be called Still-life, I mean the Stiff, the Heavy, and the Stupid; to these he gave the exactest and the most expressive colours, and in some of them look'd as if it were not in the power of human Passions to alter a Feature of him … His Face was full and long; from his Crown to the end of his Nose was the shorter half of it, so that the Disproportion of his lower Features, when soberly compos'd, with an unwandering Eye hanging over them, threw him into the most lumpish, moping Mortal that ever made beholders merry!' Engraved after the oil painting by Robert Byng, now in the Garrick Club, London.
