A slightly caricatured portrait of Cardigan, sword drawn, on a charger, probably 'Ronald', which he rode at the 'Charge of the Light Brigade'. Behind is his bugler. Henry Hope Crealock (1831-91), a captain in the 90th Light Infantry during the Crimean War, was an accomplished draughtsman, who also sketched during the Indian Mutiny, Opium Wars in China and the Zulu campaign (for the Illustrated London News). He retired from the army as a Lieutenant-General. Irish interest.

Large folio, printed stiff wrappers; title, 1p. with two columns text, dated 'March 8th, 1854' at foot; 21 tinted lithographs on 18 plates, as called for. With modern half calf gilt portfolio, with ties. Spine of wrappers rebacked, wrappers spotted, wear to title, occasional spotting to plates.
A fine record of the Seventh Xhosa Wars (1846–1847), the first in which the tribesmen used modern weapons to fight the British. Most of the plates are scenery, but the work includes a 'Fingle War Dance' and a 'Kafir and Hottentot War-Party'. The only clue to the artists is their initials, 'LG' and 'HR'; according to Mendelssohn's perusal of Hart's Army List, the only matching serving officers were Lieutenants Lumley Graham and Hugh Robinson.

Southern African women around a cooking fire. Originally an Arabic word for a non-Muslim, 'Kafir' was adopted by the Portuguese as a blanket term for the tribes of southern Africa.
